Council Member Corey Johnson became Council Speaker Corey Johnson, drawing nearly unanimous support after besting rivals in the informal process preceding the vote. Ballot proposition 1, whether to hold a state constitutional convention, has been widely discussed, but propositions 2, to allow for reductions or elimination of the pensions of public officers convicted of a felony related to their duties, and 3, to create a 250 acre land bank and to allow creation of bike paths and utility lines in the Adirondacks, have received far less attention.
Johnson was warmly praised by many of his colleagues who noted both his professional accomplishments and his personal journey. The march attracted competing local politicians including Jose Peralta and Jessica Ramos, competing for a state senate seat, and Ari Espinal and Catalina Cruz, competing for a state assembly seat.
The forum drew a modestly-sized audience of 30-35 people.
The debate was hosted and televised by NY1. Current public advocate Letitia James is expected to resign on or before December 31st so that she can take office as the New York State Attorney General on January 1st. With the annual Three Kings Day parade cancelled due to bitter cold, de Blasio moved to a small indoor celebration hosted by the Hispanic Society.
We spoke Tuesday night at a candidate forum in Howard Beach. First coming to public attention as a high school football player who revealed himself as gay, and now H.
The march started in Jackson Heights and went to offices of a landlord at 49th Street and 47th Avenue in Woodside. They likely did not sway many voters, however, as the audience excluding press and campaign staff barely outnumbered the candidates. The forum was structured to have each candidate speak on their own, with an opening statement and responding to written questions from the audience.
The rally had the air of a business meeting, with volunteers attentively listening to pre-election direction and encouragement. Joe Crowley in a Congressional District 14 Democratic primary tomorrow.
The 2017 mayoral election is over, but the photos live on. Insight, analysis and reporting on New York and national politics.
Current public advocate Letitia James is expected to resign on or before December 31st so that she can take office as the New York State Attorney General on January 1st, with a special election to fill the vacancy in mid -February.
Teachout was one of the few political figures to support Ocasio-Cortez in her race, endorsing her before Teachout was an attorney general candidate. The special election will be nonpartisan, with no party designation for candidates. He was recently released, pursuant to state law, after serving 32 of those 50 years. Our photo retrospective covers the race from a 2016 endorsement of Bill de Blasio and a January 2017 appearance by Paul Massey through election night.
